Once upon a time, deep in a great forest, there lived a hare who was the fastest runner of all the animals. He was always boasting about his speed to anyone who would listen.
“I am the fastest creature in the world!” the hare would cry out proudly. “No animal can ever beat me!”
One day, a tortoise who was slowly passing by heard this and replied, “I challenge you to a race.”
The hare burst out laughing. “A tortoise racing against me? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!”
But the tortoise stood firm. “Let us begin.”
The next morning, all the animals of the forest gathered at the starting line. A fox stood as the referee and gave the signal to go.
The hare shot forward like an arrow, his legs a blur. The tortoise plodded along steadily, one slow step at a time.
After running half the course, the hare glanced back and couldn’t even see the tortoise. “He’s so slow,” the hare thought. “I’ll take a little nap under this tree and still win easily.”
The hare lay down beneath a large oak tree and drifted off to sleep.
While the hare slept, the tortoise kept moving forward - step by step, slow but never stopping.
When the hare finally woke, the sun was much lower in the sky. He leaped up and sprinted toward the finish line with all his might. But it was too late.
The tortoise had already crossed the finish line, greeted by the cheers of every animal in the forest.
The hare hung his head in shame. From that day on, he never boasted about his speed again.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. Consistent effort beats talent that rests on its laurels.
