The Prince Who Forgot to Say Thank You

Once upon a time, in a wealthy and magnificent kingdom, there lived a young prince named Athit who had everything his heart could ever want.

Servants brought him food, and the prince took it without even looking up. The barber came to style his hair, and the prince stayed silent. His tutor had taught him for ten years, and the prince never once said thank you.

“He is a prince,” the king would say whenever anyone objected. “He has no need to thank anyone.”

But one day, the prince woke up to find the palace strangely silent.

There was no smell of breakfast, no sound of footsteps on the stone floor, no one to open the curtains and let in the sunlight.

The prince walked out of his room. The long hallway was empty. The kitchen was cold. The great hall held not a single soul.

Everyone in the palace had vanished.

The prince tried to find food for himself for the first time in his life, but he didn’t know what to pick up, didn’t know how to light a fire, didn’t even know where anything was kept.

His stomach began to growl.

That evening, he found a boy sitting in the garden behind the palace — the son of the palace cook, who hadn’t gone anywhere yet.

“Do you know where everyone went?” the prince asked.

The boy nodded. “I do. They said they were tired of working without anyone ever noticing.”

The prince fell silent. “That’s it? That’s all?”

“Yes,” the boy said. “My father says people need to feel that what they do matters. Just the word ‘thank you’ can make someone feel that way.”

The prince sat down beside the boy, silent for a long time, his stomach hungry and his heart heavy, and he began thinking about all the servants who had cared for him all this time.

“If I go apologize and thank them, would it be too late?” the prince asked softly.

The boy smiled. “It’s never too late for the right words.”

The prince set out the very next day, visiting each servant at their home, apologizing, and thanking them for things he had never once acknowledged in all those years.

Some cried. Some smiled. Some hugged him.

One by one, everyone returned to the palace.

And from that day on, Prince Athit never once forgot to say thank you again, because he now understood that those two small words could heal a person’s heart more than any expensive gift ever could.

When he grew up to become king, his kingdom became known throughout the land as the happiest kingdom of all — because the king knew how to see the value in everyone, no matter how great or small their role.

Moral: Everyone wants to feel that what they do matters. The word “thank you” may seem small, but it tells another person that we see them, that we value them — and that is worth more than anything else in the world.
