The City in the Dreaming Mist

Once upon a time, in the early evening once all the stars had come out, a city appeared high up in the sky.

The city floated on a white cloud, its streets paved with starlight, its houses built from soft mist, and a silver river flowing right through its center.

But not everyone could enter that city.

Only a child who was willing to close their eyes, let themselves grow still, and stop thinking about tomorrow — even just for a moment — could see the way in.

One night, a boy named Det lay in bed thinking about all sorts of things. Tomorrow there was a test. Would his friends come over to play? Mom said she’d take him out for dinner.

The thoughts kept spinning, never stopping.

Then a soft voice rose up in his mind, like wind passing through leaves.

“Let your thoughts go, just for now.”

Det went still. “Who’s talking?”

“The city,” the voice answered. “I’m always right here. But you have to stop thinking first, before you can see me.”

Det tried closing his eyes, breathing slowly, trying not to think of anything at all.

The first time, thoughts of the test came back. He let them go.

The second time, thoughts of his friends came back. He let them go again.

The third time, no thoughts came at all. Just a warm, quiet stillness.

And then the city appeared.

Det saw glowing streets and misty houses. He walked in and discovered that in this city, he could do anything his heart desired — fly, swim through the sky, talk to animals, play among the stars.

The city held no worries, no tests, nothing to rush for. Just a light, gentle happiness.

The next morning, Det woke up fully rested, his heart light, ready for a brand new day.

From that night on, Det knew how to enter the city in the dreaming mist every single night. The way in wasn’t complicated at all — just close your eyes, breathe slowly, and let all your thoughts drift away first.

That was all it took.

And the city would always be waiting.

Sweet dreams.

Moral: True rest comes when we let go of our thoughts, even for a little while. Our bodies and minds need to recover every single night. Try breathing slowly and letting tomorrow wait — tonight is a time for rest.
