Once upon a time, high on a mountain to the north, there was a cave the villagers called the Cave of Whispers.
Legend said that if you entered the cave and sat quietly, you would hear whispers telling you secrets. Some heard where treasure was hidden. Some heard the answer to a question that had haunted them for years. But if you listened too long, you would forget the way out and remain in the cave forever.
Two children named Phut and Ploy agreed to go explore it together.
“Let’s tie a rope at the cave entrance,” Phut suggested. “Each of us holds one end. If either of us starts forgetting the way out, pull the rope.”
Ploy nodded.
Inside, the cave was dark and silent, though faint light glimmered from the stone walls. At first, they heard only the wind passing through, but the deeper they walked, the louder the whispers grew.
Phut heard a voice telling him where gold coins were buried in a backyard garden. Curious, he walked deeper. The whispers grew louder, telling him this and that. He listened, and lost himself in it.
Then he felt the rope in his hand begin to slacken.
Ploy felt the rope go loose and pulled it immediately.
Phut startled, looking around. He was now deep inside the cave, unsure which way led out. The whispers kept talking, pulling him further in.
“Phut!” Ploy’s voice came through along the rope.
That voice was familiar, warm, and it cut through the whispers instantly.
Phut gripped the rope tight and followed it.
When he emerged at the cave entrance, Ploy grabbed his arm, her face pale.
“I’ve been calling for so long,” Ploy said.
Phut looked back into the dark cave, still able to hear the faint whispers.
“What did the whispers tell you?” Ploy asked.
“They told me what I wanted to hear,” Phut answered. “But the voice that pulled me out was yours.”
The two of them walked down the mountain together. No treasure, no secrets, but a lesson far more important —
that in a world full of voices telling us what we want to hear, the voice of someone who truly loves us is the one most worth trusting.
Moral: The world around us is full of voices telling us what we want to hear. But the voice of someone who loves us and truly wishes us well is the one we should listen to most. True friendship will always pull us back when we lose our way.
