The city of Venice, Italy, is a city with no roads like other cities, but instead is filled with winding small canals. The main mode of transportation for the people is the gondola. And at this time of the year, Venice is bustling with the “Carnival.” People dress in luxurious costumes and colorful masks to celebrate joyfully.
In a small alley stood an old glassblowing workshop. “Marco”, a curly-haired boy in a striped shirt, was an apprentice in this workshop. He dreamed of becoming a master glassblower like his uncle, but so far, he could only blow small glass marbles.
One evening, while Marco was cleaning the furnace, he found a strange rainbow glass shard hidden under the ashes. It sparkled brightly even in the dark. Out of curiosity, Marco melted it and carefully blew it until it became a beautiful, colorful glass mask.
When the mask cooled, Marco tried it on. Suddenly, the whole world changed!
The once ordinary canals of Venice were now filled with a blue-green glowing light. And the most shocking thing was that Marco could see translucent, water-like creatures swimming around the building pillars. They were the “Water Sprites”, the spirits of the water who kept Venice from sinking into the sea.
Suddenly, a Water Sprite emerged from the water. She looked like a young girl made of pure, clear water. “Finally, a human who can see us!” the Water Sprite cried out in joy. “My name is Aqua. You have to help us. That mask is the long-lost Mask of Truth.”
Aqua told Marco that the “Pearl of Tides,” the power source that controlled the water level of Venice, had been stolen by a mysterious dark shadow. If they didn’t get the pearl back before midnight on the last day of the Carnival, the water would overflow and sink Venice forever.
“I will help you!” Marco answered bravely. Even though he was just an apprentice, he loved the city of Venice very much.

Aqua conjured a magical gondola made of moonlight and swirling waves. Marco jumped onto the boat, still wearing the glass mask. Aqua rowed the boat, navigating through the quiet, small canals, avoiding the crowds celebrating on the main streets.
Marco used the glass mask to search for the trail of the dark shadow. The mask helped him see glowing purple footprints stuck to the old brick walls. They followed the trail all the way to the “Doge’s Palace,” the grandest ancient palace in Venice.
“The trail disappears into the palace’s dungeon,” Marco whispered. The two of them snuck into the dark, damp dungeon. There, they found a deep dark shadow trying to absorb the power from the rainbow-glowing Pearl of Tides.
The dark shadow was none other than the Spirit of Drought, who wanted to turn Venice into dust. When it saw Marco and Aqua, it conjured a small sandstorm to attack them.
“Aqua, use your water power!” Marco shouted. Aqua gathered water from the canal outside, creating a water wall to block the sandstorm. But her water was losing strength without the power of the pearl.
Marco remembered what his uncle had taught him. “Glass is born from sand and fire, but its strength comes from fusion.” He quickly took off the glass mask and used it to reflect the moonlight shining through the window. The moonlight passing through the magical mask turned into a multi-colored beam of light, striking the dark shadow until it disintegrated into mere dust.
Aqua quickly grabbed the Pearl of Tides successfully. “We did it, Marco!”
“Hurry, let’s return the pearl to the center of the city before midnight!” Marco said.
The two quickly got back into the gondola and rowed towards St. Mark’s Square, which was the center of the celebration. The clock tower began to chime, signaling that midnight was approaching.

When the clock struck exactly midnight, Aqua raised the Pearl of Tides to the sky. A rainbow light spread across the entire city of Venice. The overflowing water slowly subsided back to normal levels. Colorful fireworks were launched into the sky to celebrate the end of the Carnival, with no one knowing that their city had just survived a major crisis.
Marco watched the fireworks with Aqua. He didn’t need to wear the glass mask anymore because the pearl had granted him the power to see the Water Sprites with his bare eyes.
“Thank you so much, Marco, the Hero of Venice,” Aqua smiled and floated back down into the water.
The next morning, Marco returned to the glassblowing workshop. He was determined to practice glassblowing to become even better, to create beautiful works of art to decorate Venice. And he knew very well that in every waterway of this city, he had clear friends protecting the city and always watching over him.
Moral of the Story: Bravery and true determination can overcome great obstacles, no matter how small or ordinary we are. And true friendship can always bridge differences.
