The Ship of Fog

Once upon a time, in a small seaside village, a legend was told that every year, on the foggiest morning of winter, a white sailing ship would emerge from the mist, dock at the pier for exactly one hour, then vanish along with the fog.

No one had ever boarded that ship, because no one knew where it would take them.

A ten-year-old boy named Lom was more curious than anyone else.

On the morning of the thickest fog, he got up while it was still dark and ran alone to the pier.

The white sailing ship really was there. Its sails fluttered though there was no wind, and no one steered it — yet it seemed to be waiting for someone.

Lom stepped aboard.

The ship set sail at once, gliding into the thick fog until the shore disappeared completely from view.

For the first minute, he was afraid. But the ship sailed smoothly and gently. Lom sat at the bow and gazed out into the white mist.

Then the fog began to clear.

Before him lay an island that appeared on no map — towering trees he had never seen, birds of colors with no names, and a beach scattered with glowing seashells.

Lom leapt off the ship and ran to explore. He found a waterfall where the water flowed upward instead of down. He found a cave that echoed with music, though no one was playing it. He found a field of flowers that opened and closed in response to sound.

Nothing on this island followed any rule he knew. Everything was new, everything was waiting to be discovered.

Just before the hour was up, the ship rang out like a bell. Lom ran back and climbed aboard.

On the journey back, he sat and wrote down everything he had seen in the notebook he’d brought along.

When they reached the pier, the fog thinned, and the ship disappeared.

Lom ran home and told everyone what he had seen. No one believed him, but he didn’t care.

Because he knew what he had seen was real, and it would always be waiting in the fog, year after year —

for anyone brave enough to step aboard without knowing where they were going.

Moral: The greatest adventures in life often begin with a step forward into the unknown. The courage to face what we don’t understand is the key to discovering the most wondrous things.
